The Southeast Texas Poison Center (SETPC), located at the UTMB main campus in Galveston, Tx, is dedicated to providing comprehensive state-of-the-art-toxicology information, treatment assistance, and preventative education to the public and health professionals within Southeast Texas since 1959. The center receives about 150 calls each day for poison emergencies staffed by nurses and pharmacists. Public preventative education consists of free health fairs, lectures and poison prevention educational materials to groups across 28 counties in the Southeast Texas public health regions 5 and 6. Special programs offered by the Southeast Texas Poison Center included the National Poison Prevention Week Poster & Coloring contest for grade school and junior high students, and volunteer Train-the-Trainer programs for adults.
