Who We Are

The Texas Poison Center Network (TPCN) was established by the Texas Legislature in 1993 when they passed Senate Bill 773. This bill mandated that a network of six regional poison centers be established to provide emergency treatment information to the citizens of Texas for poisonings or toxic exposures. Access to this health care advice is available to both the lay public and to health care providers in the state.

This 24 hour toll free resource was established by the joint efforts of the Texas Department of Health, now known as the Department of State Health Services (DSHS), the Commission on State Emergency Communications (CSEC), and the six regional poison centers to provide access to poison center services while reducing costs to the citizen.

By dialing 1-800-222-1222, the citizens of Texas have access to a network of nurses, pharmacists, paramedics, and physicians who have extensive education, training, and expertise in the field of toxicology.  If necessary, the staff may refer callers to the nearest hospital and assist in the person’s initial treatment and follow-up care.

In addition, the TPCN has the responsibility for providing public education activities for teachers, students, and citizens as well as professional educational opportunities for Texas health care providers.  The poison centers are located in the following cities:  Amarillo, Dallas, El Paso, Galveston, San Antonio and Temple.
